Cost of Migrating from Exchange Server 5.5 to  Exchange Server 2003

Published: July 27, 2004 on Microsoft website

Summary

Medium-sized organizations take heart; the cost of upgrading your servers running Exchange Server 5.5 has fallen. While a 2002 Ferris Research report calculated the cost of upgrading from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server to be about $400 per user mailbox, the cost of upgrading from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange Server 2003 is now calculated to have decreased by as much as 50 percent to about $200 per user mailbox. This decrease is attributed to the better availability of upgrade information, the improved upgrade tools in Exchange 2003, and the larger install base to reduce potential risks. Read this Ferris Research report for examples of upgrade tasks and associated costs, upgrade scenarios, a spreadsheet calculator, and several illustrative financial models. Use the information and tools in this report to help develop customized cost estimates for your own Exchange upgrade.
